Media Theorist, Author, and Consultant

I research the impact of technologies on individuals, communities, and organizations. The author of eight books, including The End of Forgetting: Growing Up with Social Media (Harvard University Press, 2019) and Content (MIT Press, 2022), I am best known for my ability to translate complex ideas about culture and digital platforms into accessible narratives for public, policy, and media audiences.

As a Professor of Culture and Media Studies at The New School, I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in media theory, media history, and cultural studies. Over the past decade, I have also held several leadership roles in higher education, including director, chair, and school dean.

In my consulting practice, I provide in-depth market and user research, advisory, and thought leadership support to individuals and organizations across various sectors, including technology, media, design, and executive education.

A dual US-Canadian citizen, I have worked and lived in cities across North America from Vancouver to Boston. Since 2008, I have called New York City home.
